Circulation and readership profile

International Tug & Salvage is published six times a year - January/February, March/April, May/June, July/August, September/October, and November/December.

The circulation is now a combination of subscription and controlled circulation (reader requested) with the eventual aim of becoming subscription only. In February 2003, an extensive 'clean-up' exercise was undertaken to remove the 'deadwood' that inevitably accumulates (although suprisingly little) after a magazine has been published for a number of years. At the same time a campaign was initiated to convert to a paid subscription basis. This campaign continues, but after just three issues, 550 plus readers were paying for the privilege or receiving IT&S. This encouraging figure has been achieved by circulating 4,500 copies to named individuals but denying just one issue per year on a computer controlled rota to non-subscribers. To put it simply, over 5,500 people received five out of the six issues published per annum, a factor that series advertisers should consider.

Media experts have expressed the view that the 'conversion to subscription' figures achieved by IT&S in such a short time is nothing short or remarkable but it should be noted that the reason lies in the impeccable origins of the start-up circulation list. The publisher, Allan Brunton-Reed, is known throughout the industry as founder and organiser for the past 35 years of the prestigious International Tug & Salvage (ITS) Conventions.

Updating of the circulation database is carried out in-house on a daily basis. Significant bonus distribution takes place at major exhibitions throughout the year including Europort (Amsterdam), IWBS (New Orleans), Seawork (Southampton), SMM (Hamburg) and Norshipping (Oslo).
